Directions for Peer Review of the Fourth Submission

Directions: Below are a set of questions you should answer about the concession and refutation offered by your two fellow students. For each draft,

  • copy the questions in a writing program document (such as Word),
  • answer the questions in some detail, and
  • when you’re done, copy-and-paste the questions and your answers back into the forum as a reply to the original post of the writer’s own draft. That is, at the bottom of the paper you’re reviewing is a button for adding a comment. Click that button and cut-and-paste your peer review beneath the paper.
  • consider what others have written about the same draft. Do you agree or disagree or both? Why? This is a discussion forum, so have a discussion; this is important.

Here are the questions to address:

1) What is the name of the title and author of the source or sources used to support the concession (this is the source that is the naysayer’s voice)?

2) In your own words, what is the position of this opposing view (the naysayer’s view as the writer of this paper characterizes it)?

3) Why is this opposing view important to this argument?

4) How does the writer challenge the naysayer’s position? In other words, how exactly does the writer try to show you that the opposing view is wrong?

5) Anything else you’d like to add or mention?

Social media is the innovation and the most important connection tool, which has allowed the communication of friends, family and business. However, this innovation has brought a price to pay, our privacy.

Although it is true, social media has brought great advances to society, although it is true, social media has brought great advances to society, but with them we have also inherited many problems, and in some cases serious situations with fatal consequences. At this point I would like to raise some objections that have throughout the debate that exists about the overuse of social media. Among the advantages we can talk about scientific advances, as well as a new form of communication, extensive writings about all kind diseases. “One example of the use of social marketing campaigns was for smoking cessation in Washington state in 2000, or more recently to increase immunization rates. In another study about antibiotics information found on Twitter, the author wrote that this microblogging social network and other similar applications may “provide a venue to identify potential misuse of misunderstanding of antibiotics, to promote positive behavior change, and to disseminate valid information.”(Kind 431). In addition, through this medium, specialists have been able to establish a relationship with their patients or have been able to take their opinions on a specific issue to the public in general. On the other hand, the political parties and their leaders have found in this medium, a great door to express their opinions or disagreements. While it is true that It is an excellent tool, it does not necessarily follow that is seemingly harmless. Although there are many advantages of the net, there is also the risk of excessive use of the computer, Carr in his book talks about how Bruce Friedman, who in his blog writes about the use of computers and the way they have altered his mental habits, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print “Friedman says” (Carr 7)”.

According to Carr scientists, researchers and specialists coincide and have verified it through images taken from the brain of patients or people who have participated in research, that definitely the brain changes after being subjected to long hours of computer use, constantly and repetitively, losing the person the ability to think, memorize, remember and analyze.

The continuous use of social media plays a leading role in a lower self-esteem among teenagers 13-17.

Yet some readers may challenge my view by insisting that social media has no impact among teenager. It seems that I am ignoring that social media has become the new forum in which teenagers choose to communicate, such as other generations has done chosen during their time. For example: at one point in time, the music on the radio, the shows on the television, and the person that was on the other end of the phone line was the medium that was used. “Social media saves lives” say the cybercrime unit. “We shouldn’t be giving social media such a bad rap”. This is nothing but a double edged sword. The same medium that is used to stop crime is the same medium that is used to create it. One prime example is cyberbullying. According to Connolly, “Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying, and 81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person”. While it is true that there are many good that may come with the medium of social media, it does not necessary follow pattern of the negative connotations associated with the overuse of the internet by young teenagers.
