Select one of the tropes of fantasy (quest, magic, heroes .) on which to write a brilliant 2 page paper analyzing how the authors’ use the trope in the stories.While there may be some comparison of the trope’s presence in both works, do not make comparison the primary focus of the paper. Discuss how the works use the trope, and its impact on the story. Analyze how well or not the trope furthers the story through the climax. While you may need to summarize parts of the story, that must be kept to a minimum. Do not write a plot summary of the works as your paper.

Frequently experiences self-doubt; quest is part of test to prove worthiness

Often is “the only one” who can complete the task

Often has a moral or value to present to the audience

Frequently on a journey of self-discovery

May flirt with the “dark side” but never crosses over; to do so would be to lose status as hero

Different types of heroes

Reluctant hero—a tarnished or ordinary man with several faults or a troubled past who is pulled reluctantly into the story or heroic acts. During the story he rises to the occasion, sometimes vanquishing a mighty foe or righting a wrong.

Flawed hero—a hero who has flaws that can sometimes interfere with their heroic quality or status.

Anti-hero—lacks conventional qualities of a hero; may even possess qualities more in line with those of a villain such as immorality, rebellion, dishonesty

Villain—foil of the hero (dark lord)

Inherently evil and cannot be converted

Other evil characters can have a cathartic moment and change to good, but never the” ultimate” villain

Good versus Evil—tied to the hero and morality

GOOD MUST ALWAYS WIN

With serialized texts, there may be an indication of evil winning at the end of one book or story, but good always wins in the end.
