At this point, you have chosen a particular literary genre to discuss from this List of Literary Genres and have completed most of the research to support your essay focus.

In the previous unit, you wrote a prewrite outline. In this unit’s Research Essay, you will transition your prewrite into a 4-5 page essay that defends your thesis/focus.

The history of society, the spoken word, and the written word are all intertwined. So how did literature evolve into the multitude of various genres which are available to reading audiences today? For example, many of you have witnessed firsthand, the breakout of Anime cinematic writing/artistry as a genre of literature. But did you know, that it was conceived in Japan in the 1960’s as a response to the animated films of Walt Disney?

Prompt:

Choose a literary genre from the List of Literary Genres and create a 4-5 page essay on the inception, the evolution, and the current traits of your chosen genre.

You must include at least three researched sources that are valid and reliable to include in your essay.

Hint to success: You should add into your essay how society contributed to the creation of this genre, the various levels and offshoots of the genre as well as current examples.

Read through all of the instructions of this assignment.

Read all of the units’ resources that pertain to your genre.

Select one of the literary genres to write about.

Your audience for this essay are people who are familiar with this genre, but not its history.

You need to use the Library resources or other search engines to select and use at least threescholarly sources that will defend your focus/thesis. Your essay will have the following components:

An Introduction: see unit resources

A thesis at the end of the introduction that clearly states your focus on how your chosen genre has evolved.

Three supporting sections of the body that support your focus

Each section should research support. Each quote, paraphrase, or new information requires an in text citation.

A concluding paragraph: see unit resources.

Requirements:

Length and format: 4-5 pages.

The title page and reference page are also required, but they should not be factored into the 4-5 page length of the essay.

It should also be double spaced, written in Times New Roman, in 12 point font and with 1 inch margins. Essay should conform to APA formatting and citation style.

Use the third-person, objective voice, avoiding personal pronouns such as “I,” “you,” “we,” etc.
