Intro: (Exposition) Give background information regarding the best-friend relationship I had with my cousin.

Thesis: (Inciting Incident) Little did I know that an illness my cousin contracted would change my life in both negative and positive ways.

Body Paragraph 1: (Rising Action) I was very surprised to learn, just days after we had spent the weekend together, that my cousin was taken to the hospital due to an aggressive infection caused by H1N1, known as the swine flu.

• My cousin was feeling under the weather as we painted the town that weekend, and I became ill immediately following his visit.
• While I was visiting my parents, one of whom, my mom, is a nurse, I was given antibiotics and started to feel better almost immediately, while my cousin continued on with his normal day-to-day thinking he had a bad flu.
• Dennis, my cousin, was admitted to the hospital the Sunday after, what would turn out to be, our last weekend of fun together, and almost immediately placed in a medically induced coma.
• Dennis was transferred from Bakersfield hospital to UCLA on the chance that UCLA would be able to better treat the aggressively destructive infection.

Body Paragraph 2: (The Climax) Dennis, my best friend, my blood, would have his fate decided a little more than three weeks after being place under a medically induced coma.

• During Dennis’ body’s fight to survive the illness trying to take his life, I spend as much time as I could near him and his parents, my aunt and uncle, but I also needed to continue my schooling and full-time job.
• I got an emotional call from my mom letting me know that Dennis’ vitals had crashed, and, while the medical staff was able to revive him this time, if he were to crash again, there would be no hope for his survival.
• Within an hour, I got a second, more emotional call from my mom explaining that Dennis had crashed a second time, and the decision was made to let go of the fight for my cousin’s life.

Body Paragraph 3: (Falling Action) Clearly devastated by the loss of my best friend, I did my best to be a rock for those who were likely even more devastated: his parents, my aunt and uncle.

• Having been a voice of comfort and a facilitator of religious hope, I did my best to provide further comfort and facilitate religious peace.
• I struggled with the reality that my best friend, my blood, was truly no longer among the living.
• My family, as a whole, demonstrated a unity and a circle of support to a level that had never before been reached.

Conclusion: (Resolution/Reflection) Endings can yield new beginnings, and, while my family was never irreconcilably at odds with one another, the passing of my cousin created a brand new strength in the bond that we share.
