HERO’S JOURNEY

In this activity you will have the chance to create your own story about an epic hero and his (or her) adventures. Your story will need to demonstrate an understanding of the traditional components of the epic, including the qualities of an epic hero and the stages of the hero’s journey.

Description: Using the steps of the Hero’s Journey as your plot line, write your own creative fiction telling the story of an Epic Hero of your designing. Before you begin writing you will complete an organizer/rough outline of your story and a brief description of your character, emphasizing those traits that fit the requirements of an Epic Hero. Download the handout, which will help you with brainstorming and plotting your story.

General Requirements:

• All stories must follow the stages of the Hero’s Journey and include required characters of helpers and villain.
• All stories must hero include several traits of the Epic Hero.
• All students must complete pre-writing steps before beginning actual story.
• All stories must include dialogue that is punctuated and formatted correctly.
• All stories must include several examples of kennings, with the kenning identified by bolded text.
• Stories may be humorous but must present a positive/edifying theme by the end.

Final Products: Stories may be completed in a variety of formats; choose the one that you will enjoy using the most.

Grading: Stories will be evaluated with consideration of the following criteria:
