Suggested outline:
1. Introduction: a hook that suggests the theme of your paper: it could be a story, a startling statistic, a leading question or quotation. Identifying information that introduced the text that you are responding to [author, date and title]. A brief summary introducing Richard’s story [ it should only be information that the reader needs in order to understand your essay] + a thesis statement that exposes the controlling idea that your essay will uncover.

2. Body paragraphs
a. Each paragraph should have: a mention of 1 controlling idea that answers your thesis: the facts from the text that you are responding to; analysis of those facts and examples; and a conclusion sentence.
b. **Make sure that each paragraph has only 1 idea.
c. **Make sure that every idea expands or reflects back to the thesis statement.
d. ** Make sure that you do not make unsubstantiated claims. If you say something is true, you must give evidence from the text and you have to explain/analyze the connection between the evidence and your claim.
3. Conclusion Paragraph:
a. Summarize the main ideas of your paragraph.
b. It is a good idea in a conclusion to make a connection back to the hook [from the introduction]
c. **Never introduce new ideas in a conclusion.
d. ** Do not introduce new/different examples from the text.
f. Draft your paper.
