The theory that is the closest to my definition of psychology is the biological theory. This major theorist for this type is Hans Selye, who discovered general adaptation syndrome (GAS) which is when stress (emotional or physical) can break down the hormonal system and caused health conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease (Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2010). William James, “these visible traits of the world are equally manifest. The real specific event is the individual, whose intervention in history gives it in each case a new and unexpected turn. But in history, as in nature, the continuous flux of change and chance transforms every being, invalidates every law, and alters every ideal” (Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2017). I have had situations that show that behavior is influenced by genetic or some type of biological process. For example, my son is being raised away from his half-sister who lives about 4 hours away with their great-grandmother. My son and his sister are not being raised together unfortunately and have spent collectively one month together in his 3 years of life to date. Their behavior though is almost identical. There will be times I will tell him he is acting like his sister, which he tends to get a kick out of or I will observe him and his mannerisms are the same as ones that his father and sister may also exhibit.


The major theories in psychology are clearly intertwined. Each theory has its own significance in the complete explanation of the science of Psychology. The three theories that most closely match my views of psychology are behavioral, cognitive and sociocultural. The concept of behaviorism is that conditioning makes behavior clear, (Coon & Mitterer, 2016). A person’s environment does contribute to their behavior. I believe that everyone can decide how much their environment will affect them and in what ways. The second concept is cognitive. The cognitive theory is described as the thinking theory. The Gestalt psychology perspective says our perceptions form significant patterns and they are compelling, (Coon & Mitterer, 2016). I am in complete agreement with this concept. Our perspective is monumental in the way we relate to the events that occur in our lives. Finally, the sociocultural theory is the influence that social and cultural contexts behavior is considerable. Both contexts are heavily ingrained in each of us right from the beginning. Each of the theories I chose are within our personal control to change for better or worse.


Which perspective best describes adolescence? According to Dolgin, (2011) if we are to get a complete view of adolescence, we must stand in different places and look at adolescents from different perspectives, so the contributions of biologists, psychologists, educators, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, and medical personnel are all important. Each perspective holds its place when it comes to describing adolescence this approach is called the eclectic approach. When does adolescence actually begin and end? After reading our text it appears that adolescence begins at about age 12, this is when the body starts maturing toward puberty. The ending is a bit more tricky because for some it appears it can end at the age of 17 while going on for others. According to dolman, (2011) there are three stages of adolescence, early , middle, and late adolescence. Early adolescence begins from ages 11-14. Middle adolescence begins from 15-17. late adolescence from ages 18-20, with the understanding that some 18-20 year olds are adults. What factors are involved that influence an adolescent’s development? There are many factors involved that influence an adolescent’s development. According to Dolgin, (2011) the society in which adolescents grow up has an important influence on their development, relationships, adjustments, and problems.


According to our textbook the cognitive, social perspectives, biological, and psychoanalytic approaches are all valuable in being able to describe adolescences, this is known as the eclectic approach. “That is, the approach is interdisciplinary, emphasizing not one aspect of adolescent development but all of them, recognizing that no single discipline has a monopoly on the truth” (Dolgin, 2011). Adolescence begins around the age of 12 years old; the body begins to mature to state of puberty, and ends around the age of 17. “Puberty involves distinctive physiological changes in an individual’s height, weight, body composition, sex characteristics, and circulatory and respiratory systems” ( Hormonal activity plays a huge role in these puberty changes.
