1.Ethnography approach requires the researcher to live, observe and record the subject of his research. In other words, a researcher working on a particular tribe or culture needs to live within the tribe. They need to learn their language and way of life and interview the people to collect primary research data. Few of the advantages of ethnography research is the material gathered by the researcher is comprehensive in nature and remains true to its subject. Ethnography is one such research approach that can bring a lost culture or community to the surface. However, there are dangers of sensitive data leakage that the culture is unwilling to share. It’s quite complicated and difficult as a researcher has to spend months living in a tribe.

Participant observation is a research method in ethnography where the researcher observes the community where he lives for research purpose. The researcher is able to record first-hand observation. There is no scope for inaccuracy. That being said, there are dangers of misrepresentation by the observer.

Interviews are a one-to-one question and answer conversation used by researchers to learn opinions or simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’. They have the ability to collect accurate responses especially in percentages or numbers like the number of students in a university who prefer Starbucks from McDonald’s. Alternatively, interviews can be tedious and time taking because of its one-to-one conversations.

Surveys use interviews and questionnaires to collect responses. They can cover a large number of respondents at a time. Surveys include multiple nature of responses in form of percentages, opinions, interviews, and behaviors. However, responses are likely to be inaccurate as the respondents are free to respond.

Existing sources or archival research is the method used by researchers to collect data that have already been collected. There are fewer chances that the information collected is incorrect. Nevertheless, one of the major drawbacks of this research is that sources like books or manuscripts might not be in good condition to be accessed by researchers

Experiments by sociology researchers can be conducted either in a laboratory or in form of field research. Experiments are quite original and primary in nature, which naturally makes it quite reliable and provable. However, experiments on humans can go terribly wrong as subjects might turn more violent as in the case of Stanford Prison Experiment.

2.Ethnography is the scientific way to describe one’s culture and custom, the upside about this practice is that one can gain an understanding through a rather innocent approach. To observe first and than form an opinion rather to judge other culture as compared to ours. The weaknesses is a question whether we are able to looking at a different culture without forming an opinion unconsciously and then judge before we observe or observe to satisfy the opinion we already formed.

Participant observation’s strength is that with intense involvement over a period of time to observe a foreign group of individual, one not just observe but deeply involved in the life and customs one wish to study. The downside is that one can easily crossed path with ethical as well as illegal problems and could be potentially dangerous.

Interview are a great way to getting to know and study people whom we share a similar culture to our own but interviewing someone who spoke a different language with a help of a translator can limit the means for us to fully understand the meaning behind certain words.

Survey’s strength comes from the uniformity of the questions and it can get the basic points across in a relatively short amount of time and it can be down online so it really is a time saver. The down side is because it can be down online, same people are not taking it seriously and would go through it without really thing about the questions asked. Also, since the questions are already in place, it does not leave much room for individuality, no thinking outside the box and often times it is not a good thing.

Existing sources can be relied upon since some professionals already made such conclusions with facts and observation and can come in handy since we cannot do and prove every research on our own. The weakness is that sometimes it can limit our perspective because we hold such conclusions as the truth and it is difficult to prove otherwise so we follow them and it is hard for us to accept new discoveries or insights.

Experiment is a great way to discover and learn the truth about the world, all great scientists have conduct experiment. The downside is in order to conduct, we usually need a lot of time and money if not put ourselves in dangerous situations.
