Topic 1: Types of Systems

  • You are asked to give a quick talk to a group of firefighters about the different types of fire alarm systems. What would be the major topics for you to address to the group so they can respond appropriately? Why? Please include if you are able to re set a fire alarm as firefighters. If so what are your guidelines for doing so?

Topic 2: Codes and Fire Protection Systems

You have been assigned to the position of fire marshal in your local fire department. A local church group approaches you about renting several store fronts in a strip shopping center. They tell you they are looking at taking over three units in order to set up a church daycare. The shopping center was built in the 1960s and has no fire protection systems in place. It was originally built and used as a mercantile occupancy. The total square footage of the three units is 7,200 sq. feet.

The group wants to know what they will have to do in terms of fire code compliance in order to use these units as a daycare. You advise them you will research it and get back to them. Discuss what codes issues will need to be considered along with what types of fire protection systems the group would need to have installed. This would be a change of occupancy. What type of initiating devices would you want to see?Think about what the occupants may be doing?

Chapter 3: Fire Alarm System Components and Functions

Surviving a structure fire is dependent upon the amount of time that passes between the start of a fire, a person’s realization there is a fire, and the associated evacuation time. Even under the best circumstances, a fire can quickly become very dangerous. Frequently, a person has very little time to evacuate. Installation of a fire alarm system provides for early notification in a fire emergency and is critical to an individual’s chance of survival.

Chapter 4: Types of Fire Alarm and Detection Systems

It is time to examine how all of these components come together to make a fire alarm system. The most basic fire alarm system has a control panel, initiating devices, and notification appliances that sound a local alarm. The most sophisticated has integrated detection systems, controls to operate other building systems, two-way communication, voice evacuation, and automatic capabilities to communicate the system’s status to on-site and off-site monitoring facilities. Simple or sophisticated, the type of fire alarm system depends on many factors established by the model codes. A discussion of the when and where to install requirements for a particular type of system and the referenced standards used to design and install manual fire alarm and automatic detection systems are the first topics discussed in this chapter. In the middle part, the discussion covers the different system types and system classifications.
